Red light therapy (also called photobiomodulation, or PBM) uses specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light to influence how your cells produce energy. Below is a plain, evidence-first look at what the published research actually shows, what it does not, and where the science is still early. Every study is linked to its real peer-reviewed source so you can read it yourself.

How it is thought to work

Inside your cells, structures called mitochondria produce most of your energy (ATP). A key enzyme in that process, cytochrome c oxidase, absorbs red and near-infrared light. The leading hypothesis is that certain wavelengths (commonly studied ranges are roughly 630 to 680 nm red and 810 to 850 nm near-infrared) can help this enzyme work more efficiently, supporting cellular energy production.

This is a mechanism supported by laboratory research. It is not a claim that light cures disease.

What the research actually shows

These are real, published studies. We describe them honestly, including their limits, because a lot of research in this field is small or early and overstating it helps no one.

Proof of concept

Aging eyesight and 670 nm light

Researchers at University College London found that a single three-minute exposure to deep-red 670 nm light improved color-contrast (cone) sensitivity in people aged 34 to 70, with a partial effect still measurable about a week later. The same exposure given in the afternoon produced no benefit, pointing to a time-of-day effect tied to mitochondrial function.

Limit: a small study (about 20 people in the main group) measuring a lab vision test, not a clinical outcome.

Small pilot

Circulating stem cells

In a 2022 pilot study, applying near-infrared light over the shin bones (near bone marrow) was followed by a large rise in circulating CD34+ stem cells within hours. The reported increase was real.

Limit: a small pilot of 15 healthy volunteers with no control group, measuring a blood marker rather than a health outcome.

Childhood nearsightedness (myopia)

Repeated low-level red-light therapy has been studied extensively for slowing myopia progression in children. A 2025 network meta-analysis pooling 41 randomized trials (6,434 eyes) ranked it favorably among common approaches.

Safety note: the research community has flagged genuine retinal-safety questions for this use, including isolated case reports of reversible changes. Long-term safety is not yet established. Discuss with an eye doctor, do not treat this as a DIY decision.

Preliminary

Thyroid (Hashimoto) and other areas

Clinician-applied photobiomodulation has been studied for autoimmune thyroiditis, with a 350-patient study reporting improved thyroid markers. Early work also exists for post-viral fatigue.

Limit: in the large thyroid study the light was bundled with supplements and the design was not randomized. The post-viral fatigue evidence is strongest only as an uncontrolled case series, so read it as preliminary.

What the research does NOT show

Watch for a common mix-up. Some dramatic “red light” claims online actually come from a different, hospital-only procedure called photodynamic therapy, which uses an injected or applied light-sensitizing drug plus a medical laser. For example, a well-known Lancet Oncology trial of 413 men with prostate cancer used an intravenous drug activated by a laser fiber placed inside the body.

That is not the same as an at-home light panel, and studies like it do not support any claim that consumer red-light devices treat cancer or serious disease. We point this out so you are not misled.

Methylene blue often comes up alongside red light because both are tied to mitochondrial energy production. It is a real, FDA-approved pharmaceutical (for a blood condition called methemoglobinemia). At low doses it can act as an alternative electron carrier in the mitochondria, and one small human trial observed a short-term memory and attention signal. Its cancer research is animal and laboratory only.

Safety first: low doses only. It should not be combined with SSRIs or other serotonergic medications (serotonin syndrome risk), and it is contraindicated in people with G6PD deficiency. None of this is medical advice.

The honest bottom line

Red and near-infrared light have a credible mechanism and a growing base of early human research, especially for skin, recovery, and cellular energy. Much of that research is still small or preliminary, and light therapy is not a treatment for any disease. Talk to a qualified healthcare provider before starting any new therapy, particularly for the eyes, during pregnancy, or if you take medication.
